Why walk alone?

“Your life story is almost always the most interesting when you’re telling what you learned from someone, experienced with someone, or someone you wish you’d met.”

Brent Foulke - CoFounder, Vanguard Leaders, Inc.

Join like-minded leaders from across the nation in a cohort that will strengthen your leadership skills, build lifelong friendships, and enrich your spiritual journey. Gain insights from influential, nationally recognized leaders in informal, conversational gatherings, along with best practices discussions among the cohort. Expect plenty of laughter, listening, and learning. The Vanguard Leaders experience will elevate your leadership and renew your soul.

Vanguard Leaders cohorts are now forming for the 2026/2027 season.

Jesus started the first ministry cohort 2,000 years ago. Through this three-year experience, twelve men and numerous women developed into an unequaled leadership force. All those who follow Jesus can trace their spiritual roots to that small community of leaders.

FAQs

Why cohort learning?

Cohort development is a proven method for learning, retaining, and applying information. When we participate in communal learning opportunities, we are working with our brain’s natural wiring.

The return on investment is significant. Each gathering will serve as a master class in life and leadership. Churches, non-profit organizations, and businesses will benefit from your growth and development as a person and leader.

Plus, it’s fun!

Why three in-person gatherings?

Let’s be honest—virtual gatherings have their place. They’re great for sharing screens, swapping emojis, and pretending your camera “accidentally” froze during a tough question. But when it comes to building meaningful relationships, online meetings often fall short. Studies show that virtual interactions, while convenient, can sap emotional energy and leave us feeling more connected to our Wi-Fi router than to each other.

That’s why Vanguard’s in-person gatherings are such a game-changer. They’re more than just meetings—they’re magnetic spaces where laughter is shared, stories are told, debates spark ideas, and real trust begins to grow. It’s in these moments that growth is fertilized—not with PowerPoint slides, but with shared experiences that linger long after the name tags come off.

How much does it cost?

The Vanguard Leaders program is a transformational experience priced at $5,000—an investment not only in leadership, but in legacy. Each gathering is thoughtfully designed as a master class in life and leadership, where participants engage in high-level mentorship, visionary strategy, and deeply relational growth. The return on investment is substantial: beyond the practical tools and insights gained, cohort members develop a network of peers and mentors who champion their calling and sharpen their influence. This isn’t just leadership training—it’s a catalytic environment where purpose meets preparation.

What does the cost include?

  • Three in-person two-day gatherings in various locations in the country.

  • All room and board is covered on-site. Cohort members will arrange and cover travel costs to and from meeting locations.

  • Fun activities during each in-person gathering.

  • Virtual gatherings in between in-person meetings. The agenda will include catching up with one another, prayer, and special presentations from influential practitioners on hot topics.

  • Mentoring and coaching will be available from Vanguard Leaders staff, Don, Brent, and Lori, who are highly experienced leadership practitioners.

  • Building lifelong friendships with colleagues walking a similar path as your own.

How do members fund their experience?

Many Vanguard Leaders allocate their annual continuing education, travel, or conference funds for this program. The true cost of the program is much higher than the registration fee. Vanguard Leaders, Inc. is matching your cohort fee, dollar for dollar in program expenses.

In some cases, partial scholarships may be available. Contact one of the Vanguard staff for more information.

Lori Cartmill

  • Co-Founder

Don is a proud father of four daughters and an even prouder Pops to eight energetic grandkids—his personal board of advisors, whether he asked for one or not. Before her passing, Don shared thirty-eight beautiful years of marriage with Gail, whose wisdom and warmth continue to shape his journey.

With forty-five years in ministry, Don’s leadership has extended well beyond the church walls. He built lasting relationships with community organizations, spearheaded the development of a fifty-three-acre community park, and created a leadership pipeline that’s empowered hundreds to step confidently into their calling.

Don is the author of the best-selling Lead Like a Bodyguard: Fifty-Two Timeless Leadership Lessons. Don began pastoring Vibrant – A Christian Church in 1982. Under his guidance, the congregation grew into a vital and influential presence in Pennsylvania’s capital region over thirty-eight years.

Don enjoys a fine cigar, a good bourbon, and great conversation. He serves on several boards of directors across community organizations and both national and international ministries. With a steady hand and a keen eye for potential, Don continues to invest in leaders and organizations, believing that long-term influence is built one relationship, one lesson, and one leader at a time.

  • Co-Founder

Brent Foulke is joyfully married to his wife, Kay, and together they are the proud parents of two sons and two daughters. Their family has grown to include two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, and eight cherished grandchildren—four boys and four girls. Though spread out across New York, Missouri, and Colorado, each member of the Foulke family is deeply engaged in loving and serving their communities in the name of Jesus.

With more than 42 years of ministry and leadership experience, Brent’s journey has included pastoral roles in local churches in Boca Raton and Jacksonville, Florida. In 1992, Brent and Kay responded to God’s call to move to Albany, New York, to plant a new church and share the message of Jesus in a region often described as post-Christian. That church—Christ’s Church of the Capital District—became not only a ministry hub but a beloved home.

Following the establishment of Christ’s Church, Brent expanded his influence as a coach and catalyst for church planting across the United States and globally. He has helped guide dozens of church plants domestically and supported hundreds more around the world. A key part of this work was leading an in-depth leader assessment process—combining self-discovery and professional evaluation—that equipped more than 1,000 prospective leaders to grow as servant leaders in God’s Kingdom.

Brent has also served in prominent national roles, including as Executive Director of the Exponential Conference and later as Global Vice President of Stadia Church Planting. In each of these roles, he found great joy in convening, mentoring, and facilitating cohorts of leaders in pursuit of gospel-centered impact.

Brent and Kay continue to reside in New York’s Capital Region, where they are actively involved in a vibrant church community. His passion for the Church and for raising up the next generation of leaders remains as strong as ever.

  • Lori Cartmill — Trusted Community Leader and Ministry Builder

Lori Cartmill’s leadership has left a lasting imprint on both church and community life across the region. Best known for her dynamic role as Children’s and Community Impact Director at Vibrant: A Christian Church, Lori cultivated vibrant ministries and led major community initiatives with heart, excellence, and enduring impact.

Her most visible achievement remains Adventure Park—a fifty-three acre community oasis she helped develop in partnership with local organizations. Its centerpiece, the Adventure Zone Playground, is a fully accessible play space designed to welcome children of all abilities, reflecting Lori’s inclusive vision and tireless advocacy. The park quickly became a beloved hub for families across the region.

Lori was a sought-after partner among civic and nonprofit organizations, recognized for her ability to rally resources, volunteers, and vision around shared goals. Her volunteerism extended well beyond her church role, contributing to numerous community-led events and programs year after year.

Known among regional churches as the most accomplished children’s pastor and community development director, Lori consistently raised the bar. She not only created thriving environments for children and families—she also built a sustainable leadership pipeline, mentoring ministry leaders with wisdom and intentionality.

Her signature events include the annual Tim Tebow “Night to Shine” prom for individuals with special needs, which she led with elegance and joy, and the region’s largest Easter Egg Hunt, distributing over 50,000 candy-filled eggs to more than 2,000 participants. These moments showcased Lori’s rare gift for combining logistics and love to create experiences that foster belonging and celebration.

Relational Legacy: Lori is a devoted wife of many joyful years, mother to two sons, proud grandmother to one precious granddaughter, and godmother to four extraordinary young women. Loved by both her church family and the broader community, Lori continues to inspire through her servant-hearted leadership, contagious energy, and commitment to bringing people together for a greater purpose.

“If you want to grow personally and professionally, find yourself some comrades and take on life together.”
